HOW I ROBBED 80 BANKS

Eric Manson says he never uses a gun when he robs a bank. He says he doesn't need one. Sometimes he doesn't even raise his voice. With icy calmness, he asks the teller to change a bill. He announces his intentions only when the cash drawer opens. "I just . no glass partitions between the teller and the customer and no security guards.. . say, 'This is a robbery,' " he explained, clasping his hands together. "I don't want to scare anybody, I don't want to hurt anyone." Most tellers comply. But when they don't, that's when Manson comes across as the serial criminal that he is. Manson, 40, explained his methods in an interview inside the Manhattan Detention Center. Authorities say he has robbed close to 80 banks over the last 15 years, inclu ding 23 in the city in just the last eight months. He says his take has been about $30,000. He says he told the teller at TD Bank at 47 Third Ave. on Nov. 29: "Don't be a hero, or I will blow your f---ing head off." He asks only for loose currency that can't have a dye pack in it. Normally wearing a hat and sunglasses, he cases his targets carefully, making sure there are "There is never any security," he said. He's been caught three times in the past 15 years - but never in the act. "I don't know if they're trying to make it easy, but there's really nothing to it," boasts the bald bandit, his hulking 6-foot, 200-pound frame draped in a gray prison jumpsuit. He says he's knocked off "only" 50 banks. "If [NYPD] Commissioner [Raymond] Kelly wants to sit down, I can tell him how to prevent people like me from robbing banks," Manson says. Adding security guards in every branch is a no-brainer, he says, but bolster them with regular police patrols. "Nobody wants any trouble," he says. "They just want the money." He especially likes to hit Capital One branches, he says, adding that Commerce Bank branches were tough to target. Manson says unemployment and a two-decade crack addiction drove him to a life of crime. In 1993, he confessed to 41 heists in Los Angeles and served four years of a five-year sentence. In 1997, he served 10 years for two robberies in Pennsylvania. Last M arch, the father of two and grandfather of a 2-year-old girl says he lost his construction job here.
