FBI braces for bank-robbery boom

As the economy continues to go into a tailspin, the FBI is bracing for a potential spike in bank robberies as Christmas approaches.

"The holidays are a stressful time for everyone, and with the economy on top of that, we anticipate the desperation factor to play a part in the thoughts of individuals who otherwise normally would not do something like this," FBI Special Agent Juan Becerra told the Deseret News on Wednesday.

It's no secret among law enforcement that crime goes up in bad economic times. Desperate people are often driven to do drastic things. The FBI said nationally, bank robberies are up slightly. Locally, they have not increased to noticeable levels.

"However, we anticipate that with the economy the way it's moving and as people become financially despondent, that could go up," Becerra said.

Many financial institutions the Deseret News contacted were reluctant to discuss any concerns about a robbery trend. Some financial institutions said they have placed their employees on alert this time of year for suspicious activity — but more for bad checks than bank robberies.

"We sort of always brace ourselves for the holidays," Zions Bank executive vice president Rob Brough said Wednesday. "We certainly see often an increase in attempted fraud in difficult economic times and the holidays."

While not wanting to stereotype the typical robber, Becerra said a lot of people they have arrested admit to robbing a bank or credit union to feed a drug habit. In the past, federal agents have seen convicted felons who have struggled to land a job once they're outside of prison.

"I've had guys that have robbed a bank because they needed money to buy a beer, a Big Gulp or cigarettes," he said.

Beyond banks and credit unions, the FBI is seeing a trend of entire ATMs being swiped. Recently, federal agents were called to the College of Eastern Utah in Price where an ATM vanished.

To combat the problem, the FBI and members of metropolitan law enforcement agencies meet weekly to go over robberies in the Salt Lake area. Robbers are given monikers to easier track them ("the hoodie bandit," is one example).

"All police departments are being appraised, briefed on the latest trends, subjects we're looking for, methods used to rob," Becerra said. "We're working with our local counterparts to leverage resources."

Financial institutions also conduct regular trainings with their employees on what to do in the event of a robbery. They have also made sweeping upgrades to their surveillance technology.

"Four to five years ago it was straight VCRs, poor-quality black-and-white images," said Travis Clegg, the director of security for Utah Community Credit Union. "It's all digital now. High-quality, very responsive equipment."

Brough said his employees were all well-trained to deal with any number of problems.

"We engage our employees in continual training on what to look for and procedures in the event that something does happen and how to handle it," he said.

Bank robbery carries a potential 20-year federal prison sentence, and an extra five years is tacked on if there's a weapon used. Thus far, the Salt Lake City FBI office boasts an 80 percent robbery solution rate.

"If you come to Salt Lake City and try to rob a bank, we're probably going to catch you," Becerra said.

Deputies arrest 5 bank-robbery suspects

Sacramento County Sheriff's Deputies arrested a five-man bank robbery crew from the Bay Area who they allege robbed a bank in the Foothill Farms area, sheriff's officials said.
Around 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, three robbers entered the Bank of America at the 5300 block of Auburn Boulevard, said Sgt. Tim Curran, sheriff's spokesman.
Brandishing guns, they took over the bank and demanded money, he said. Sheriff's deputies arrived, but the robbers had already fled, Curran said.
Using witness descriptions of the men and their getaway car, deputies tracked the men to a house on the 3800 block of Kern Street in the Del Paso Heights area, Curran said.
All three of the suspected robbers and two men suspected of being getaway drivers were arrested, Curran said. The crew used two cars, leaving the bank in one and ditching it for another at another location, Curran said.
Taken into custody were Anthony Flynn, 33, of Pittsburg; Mashai Hall, 29, of Oakley; Coray Johnson, 29, a transient originally from Sacramento; Edwolon Beshears, 28, of Sacramento; and Donte Beshears, 22, of Bay Point
The crew might also be responsible for other robberies in Sacramento and surrounding areas, Curran said.

Robbers take over bank, pistol-whip teller

LAKE FOREST – A bank robber pistol-whipped a teller this morning in what authorities called a "takeover"-style bank robbery, in which three men tried to gain access to the bank's vault at gunpoint, authorities said.
A pregnant customer was taken to a hospital when she began to have contractions after the violent robbery, said Jim Amormino, spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff's Department.
The three men took cash from several drawers and drove away in a white GMC Jimmy after ordering customers to the floor and threatening to shoot an assistant bank manager.
Investigators are looking for a vehicle with the license plate 5VZK379.
At 9:13 a.m., the three men walked into the Bank of America in the 22000 block of El Toro Road in Lake Forest, in a small shopping center.
"They came in saying, 'This is a robbery' and asked for a manager," Amormino said.
An assistant manager of the bank identified himself and one of the men grabbed him and pointed a handgun to the top of his head, Amormino said.
The three men ordered bank employees and five customers to the floor as one of them grabbed the assistant manager by the collar and moved him to the back of the bank, all the while holding the gun to his head, Amormino said.
"He tried to get him to open the vault but was unsuccessful," Amormino said.
The man then told the assistant manager to open a cash drawer and give him the money.
A second man jumped over the counter and pointed a gun at a male and a female teller while telling them to take cash out from drawers. The man then hit the male teller, who is in 30s, in the head, Amormino said.
Meanwhile, the third man appeared to keep an eye out at the door of the bank.
The customers remained on the floor during the course of the robbery, Amormino said. The pregnant woman and the male teller were taken to a hospital to be treated. Their conditions are unknown.
The man who grabbed the teller was described as black male, about 5-foot-8 and 175 to 190 pounds. He was wearing a ski mask, blue jeans and a blue hooded sweat shirt, Amormino said.
The man who hit the bank teller with the gun was described as a black male wearing a blond wig underneath a mask, Amormino said. He is believed to have been wearing white makeup, although part of his skin was visible on his neck, below the mask.
He was described as 6 feet tall, 190 pounds and wearing a dark blue jacket with hood.
Sheriff's officials and FBI investigators are looking at surveillance video to see if the three men are connected to other robberies.

Suspects Sought In Bank Of America Robbery

SAN DIEGO -- Three men robbed a Bank of America Monday, but left some of the loot behind when they abandoned the getaway car, police said.The robbers, dressed in black and armed with pistols, entered the bank at 7404 Jackson Drive around 9:25 a.m., San Diego police Sgt. Ray Battrick said.They took an undisclosed amount of money, then fled, Battrick said. The men later abandoned the car at Lochmoor Drive and Murray Park Avenue, Battrick said. A bystander followed the robbers for a time, but lost track of them.

One robber was described as 6 feet 2 inches tall and another as 6 feet tall and weighing about 180 pounds. There was no description of the other suspect.
