U.S. army in Afghanistan will be able to pay the Taliban fighters if they renounce violence against the government in Kabul. The funds are provided in the new defense budget for the year 2010 and President Barack Obama is expected to sign it on Wednesday.
Such payments are already in wide use in Iraq, where they contributed to calming of Sunni insurgents, but this is the first time they are officially used in Afghanistan.
Commanding emergency response program (CERP) provides funds for cleaning of the roads, digging wells and other humanitarian aid to the people of Iraq and Afghanistan. A new law will approve CERP the use of funds for payment of Taliban wariors, President of the Senate Committee on Armed Power Carl Levin said on Tuesday.
By law, the Afghan fighters who renounce violence against the government in Kabul will be paid to “protect their towns and villages,” said Levin.
He pointed out that a similar Iraq program contributed to the fact that 90.000 Iraqis changed sides and abandoned rebellion. CERP was approved with 1.3 billion U.S. dollars for the year 2010.

Police have a male suspect in custody who they believe is responsible for a bank robbery that occurred around 9 a.m. today.

Police confirmed that the robber is not Ray Edward Lee, the man suspected of two other bank robberies in Des Moines this week.

The suspect in today's robbery reportedly entered Community State Bank at 1401 E. Euclid Ave. wearing a ski mask and large fur coat. He pointed a gun — likely a BB gun — at a teller and demanded money, according to police spokeswoman Lori Lavorato
