Des Moines police took a man into custody today who twice last week allegedly robbed US Bank offices in the city.
Ray Edward Lee was arrested shortly after noon today, when detectives stopped a car, in which Lee was riding, around Southwest 7th and Tuttle streets. After a short foot chase to the 500 block of west Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway, they caught up with him.
Lee is now in custody.
Before last week's bank robberies, officers had dealings with Lee in 1998, when he crouched in a car on the Fleur Drive bridge, smoking crack cocaine and holding money taken in a robbery at West Bank, 501 Locust St.
At that time, officers surrounded the car and captured Lee after a 5-hour standoff. He was sentenced to 11 years in prison for robbing two banks: the West Bank office and the Mercantile Bank at 604 Locust St.
He was identified Oct. 27 as the man who allegedly robbed the US Bank office in the skywalk, 555 Walnut St., and the next day as the man who robbed the US Bank office at 115 Euclid Ave.
Lee has been working in the Des Moines area and has been living in an apartment just outside Des Moines on the northwest side. People who know him said last week that he hadn't been back to the apartment and he quit showing up for work.
Lee allegedly passed notes at both US Bank locations. He did not display a weapon

Stop and think a minute; while you're reading these robbery up-dates there is a stolen car parked by your bank entrance, backed in, no license plates, engine running, with 3 armed gangsters with masks on their laps, smoking crack checking out the bank security measures and waiting for the armored truck to leave, just take a peek out the window, call the Police or cross your fingers.
